Born in 1953, Susan Bower has become one of Yorkshire’s most anticipated artists showcasing her work across the country. Having painted and drawn all her life, Bower has been a professional artist for almost 30 years. The quality of her work was quickly recognised by the art world and in 1992 she was Elected member prestigious national society; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). She was then elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) in 1994. Bowler shows regularly in many prestigious London galleries, along with the New English Art Club at the Mall Galleries. She has also recently had three solo exhibitions in independent London galleries.
Bower aims to “paint the familiar & the intimate – family scenes (usually involving dogs & cats), outings and people observed in restaurants & on family occasions.” Her new collection has captured this precisely with her witty portrayals of family life and delightfully humorous paintings centred around observations of domestic situations. Is it her degree in psychology that enables her to know how to tug at the heart strings with her familiar family scenes or puncture the arrogance of the expert?
In the relaxed setting of a fine Victorian house overlooking York’s famous Knavesmire, The Kentmere House Gallery will be showcasing Bower’s new collection ‘Families and Other Animals’ from 22 March – 3 May. The Gallery is open to the public every Thursday evening, 6pm-9pm, and the first weekend of each month, Saturday & Sunday 11am-5pm. Each of her paintings are in oils and are available to purchase between £1800 – £2000.
Surprisingly, the Kentmere House is one of the very few outlets for Bower’s work in the north. Although Bower spent the last 30 years living in a village between York and Leeds, she seemed to be ignored by the public galleries in her native county, Yorkshire. Instead, most of her work is sold in London, the Cotswolds and the south-west.
